Since end of May 2000, the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC), which is part of the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) platform, has been publicly available as a Final Release. In the first section of this paper, an overview of the current status of the J2ME specification and a concise introduction to this programming platform for small, mobile devices is given. The second section describes performance benchmark tests of CLDC Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) that were carried out on common Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) platforms and presents the results of these tests.
As a conclusion, the test results show that the J2ME specification is suited for even ambitious Java programming on PDAs. The choice of the JVM is of different importance depending on the target PDA platform.
